Customer Challenges
- Multistream Technologies’ on-premises live streaming solution faced significant infrastructure limitations, including low uptime and insufficient availability of GPU-based instances. During high-demand events, uptime dropped, and streaming requests failed to meet performance benchmarks, severely restricting the platform’s ability to scale and support growing user demands efficiently.
- Without auto-scaling or load balancing, the on-premises infrastructure struggled to dynamically manage fluctuating demands. The lack of scalability caused processing delays, with highlight generation times exceeding acceptable limits for some users during peak events.
- Streams contributed by multiple simultaneous OTT platforms from India were ingested and transformed into media live channels, where they underwent motion and sports data analytics. However, delays caused by manual workflows and the absence of automated transcoding disrupted the processing of highlight clips, impacting delivery timelines and reducing customer satisfaction.
- Integration challenges with their current vendor’s media services hindered the scalability of the analytics and processing workflows, impacting the delivery of services. This delayed the deployment of new features, reducing competitive agility.
- The team faced significant operational overheads, with infrastructure management requiring extensive time for tasks like database maintenance and server monitoring. Additionally, the lack of automated compliance checks led to reported security incidents annually, jeopardizing sensitive sports data and analytics, and underscoring the need for a managed services provider to streamline operations and enable the development team to focus on innovation.
- The highlight clips were distributed to external platforms, including social media and OTT services. However, these platforms encountered high latency during video playback, with buffering rates affecting regions with limited connectivity. This negatively impacted the user experience, leading to reduced engagement and lower audience retention.
Our Solution Approach
To address the challenges faced by Multistream Technologies, Workmates designed and implemented a scalable and resilient solution using AWS services. This solution enabled seamless live stream management, real-time analytics, and efficient content delivery.
Application Hosting:
The deployment of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) with NVIDIA GPU-enabled instances ensured scalable and cost-efficient video analysis. This architecture reduced processing times during high-demand sports events, dynamically scaled up GPU nodes to handle spikes in workload, and maintained uptime consistently. The platform efficiently processed concurrent live streams, eliminating bottlenecks that previously disrupted performance. This setup provided the scalability and reliability necessary to meet the growing demands of real-time sports analytics and live streaming.
Live Stream Ingestion:
AWS Elemental MediaLive was implemented to manage the ingestion of live streams, enabling real-time encoding and seamless preparation of video feeds for downstream processing. This service ensured uninterrupted, high-quality streaming, supporting the concurrent handling of live streams daily. By maintaining consistent video quality and reducing encoding delays, MediaLive enhanced the overall efficiency and reliability of live stream workflows, even during peak demand events.
Video Transcoding:
AWS Elemental MediaConvert was deployed to automate the creation of MP4 highlight clips from live streams, processing clips per month. MediaConvert optimized these clips for various platforms and resolutions, ensuring compatibility across devices and networks. This solution replaced manual workflows, reducing highlight generation times and enabling delivery within minutes, meeting tight timelines and significantly improving customer satisfaction.
Storage & Delivery:
Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) served as the central storage hub for live stream recordings and managed generated highlight clips per day. Its scalability and durability ensured secure and reliable storage, accommodating the platform’s growing media demands. Amazon CloudFront, integrated with S3, provided low-latency, global content delivery, reducing video playback buffering. This combination enabled seamless access to video highlights for stakeholders across global streaming platforms, ensuring consistent and high-performance delivery, even during peak traffic.
Workflow Automation:
To automate critical tasks and streamline media processing workflows, a combination of AWS Step Functions and EventBridge was implemented. These services coordinated the execution of transcoding jobs in AWS Elemental MediaConvert. The serverless workflow automation processed automation events daily, reducing manual intervention. By ensuring consistent, event-driven orchestration of tasks, this architecture significantly improved processing times and enhanced the overall reliability of the platform’s media workflows.
Monitoring & Security:
Amazon CloudWatch enabled real-time monitoring of system health, resource utilization, and performance, detecting and addressing anomalies within minutes. This proactive approach improved issue resolution times, ensuring consistent platform reliability. AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) enforced secure access with fine-grained permissions, safeguarding sensitive data and operations. This setup ensured a robust and secure environment for live streaming and analytics.
This AWS-powered solution enabled Multistream Technologies to efficiently manage live streams, automate highlight generation, and deliver actionable insights to stakeholders, significantly reducing operational costs and enhancing the overall user experience.
Results and Benefits
- Faster Deployment: Migrating to a scalable AWS architecture shortened deployment cycles, enabling Multistream Technologies to efficiently manage large volumes of live streams and highlight clips each month. This transformation streamlined live-streaming workflows and ensured the platform could grow without impacting user experience.
- Enhanced User Experience: By eliminating performance bottlenecks in the legacy system and adopting a modular, cloud-native infrastructure, Multistream improved streaming quality and reduced buffering, resulting in a smoother and more reliable viewing experience for end users.
- Seamless Scaling: Replacing manual scaling processes with AWS’s dynamic scaling capabilities allowed the platform to adjust automatically to traffic surges. This ensured stable performance during high-demand events and maintained consistent uptime even under peak loads.
- High Availability and Fault Tolerance: Leveraging automated failover mechanisms improved service continuity by minimizing downtime and maintaining operations during infrastructure disruptions. This reinforced business resilience and strengthened user confidence in the platform.
- Streamlined Operations: Automation of infrastructure management significantly reduced the need for manual intervention each month. This freed Multistream’s teams to focus on enhancing sports analytics workflows and introducing new service features, while operational efficiencies also helped lower overall costs.
- Improved Security and Compliance: Enhanced security protocols, including IAM policies, private VPC configurations, and data encryption with AWS KMS, safeguarded sensitive video content and ensured compliance with regulatory The platform experienced fewer security incidents, further enhancing reliability and trust.
This AWS-powered solution enabled Multistream Technologies to deliver high-quality streaming services, scale seamlessly during peak demand, and maintain robust security
Security Considerations
- MultiStream Technologies implemented a robust security framework leveraging AWS services to protect resources, data, and operations effectively.
- Access Control: User and group access to AWS resources was restricted with fine-grained permissions using AWS IAM. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) was enabled for enhanced account security.
- Patch Management: Security and OS patches were automated and applied quarterly using AWS Systems Manager (SSM), ensuring all resources remained up-to-date.
- Data Encryption: All data at rest, including EBS volumes, S3 buckets, and RDS databases, was encrypted using AWS KMS. Credentials were securely stored in AWS Secrets Manager.
- Network Security: Servers were hosted in private subnets, with SSH ports bound to a SSL VPN server and default ports customized. Databases were accessible only through application containers or VPN.
- Monitoring and Detection: AWS CloudTrail provided visibility into API calls, while AWS GuardDuty monitored for threats and malicious activities. Weekly Trusted Advisor checks ensured compliance with security best practices.
- Configuration Management: AWS Config was used to detect configuration drifts, ensuring policy compliance and consistent infrastructure.
